The Mini BSO

At the heart of music education

Special Needs

REQUIREMENTS

A large performance space, usually the school hall, is required for the two concerts. For the workshops, the musicians would normally move to classrooms to work with the different groups. These sessions can be noisy, so a certain amount of seperation may be necessary!

Working in Special Schools has been one of the most important activities of the Mini BSO. This is usually a half day project and is in the following format.

A concert by the Mini BSO lasting half an hour which is entertaining, fun and invites participation.

Music Workshops (Half hour approx.) Each musician will work with a group of children to create a piece of music. Different themes are targeted at each ability level. These can include creative composition based on subjects such as football, Titanic, animals, etc. They can also be story based such as Bear Hunt or perhaps a samba band with spots for solo breaks!

Final performance (approx. half hour). Everyone comes together and performs the music they have created during the workshop followed by a few items by the Mini BSO as a finale.

Reviews

“The group once again had an excellent rapport with all our pupils both during the concert and in the five group workshops.”
“All the musicians really enjoyed working with the children and there was a very positive response from all the staff”
Forest Edge Special Needs School

“They all have the ability to communicate with our pupils without talking down to them, which is a tendency for some outside people who come in to work with our 11-16 year old MLD pupils.”
